Artist Bio / Statement
I am an artist and art teacher living in quaint and lovely Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. I have always created something, from greeting cards, to origami boxes, hand made books, fabric wall hangings and decorated clothing. The common denominator has always been printmaking. The natural environment and leaves and flowers of my gardens inspires my art. I take lots of pictures and zoom in to the details. The bright colors, patterns and organic forms are transformed into my prints. I work with hand carved rubber blocks, silk screen, bleach discharge, soy wax batik and direct printing with leaves.
I have been an art educator at the local Middle School for 35 years and have taught summer youth classes and have been a presenter at New England art education conferences. My work has been shown at numerous art shows, craft fairs and gallery exhibits. Recently I knocked down some walls and transformed some rooms in my home to an art studio! If you can do it - every artist should have their own space!
I have been purchasing from Dharma for many years, most recently many styles of their dyeable clothing. Most of my dyes are also from Dharma, the Procion dyes and One-Shot wool dyes.
I would encourage others to look to nature, experiment with fabrics and dyes, sketch and take lots of pictures of what inspires them! I collected pretty cloth for years, but did nothing with it, thinking I could never master quilting in the traditional patterns. One day I said to myself “the original quilters just put cloth together and stitched it! Forget about the traditional patterns and just start sewing!” That one move ( and 7 quilts later - all completely hand stitched!), and now I don’t get bowed down by rules and regulations about how something should be done!
