Jane A. Evans

Landscape Artist

Jane A. Evans is prominent in the fiber arts world as a respected artist, author, and teacher. At university, she received degrees in Literature and Education and studied Fine Arts. She also holds a Master Weaver certificate from the Guild of Canadian Weavers.

Jane has frequently been in international exhibitions and has won many awards. A writer for over thirty years, she has produced numerous articles for hand weaving journals, plus the award-winning book, A Joy Forever: Latvian Weaving, Traditional and Modified Uses. Since 1971, she has taught weaving across North America, including warp-painted rugs using Jacquard textile paints.

After years of making art in various media, Jane combined her favorite methods and developed others to create unique, textile-based, mixed-media landscapes. These works feature warp-painting with Jacquard's traditional color textile paints, hand weaving with sewing thread and textured yarns (often hand-dyed with Dharma Fiber Reactive Dye), and both hand and free-motion machine embroidery. Her mixed-media landscapes have become celebrated, and several have been in the Fiberarts Design Book series. In recent years, her work has received the Saskatchewan Arts Board's award for Innovation in Craft a record three times. Based on these extraordinary pictures, Jane was nominated for Canada's two most prestigious awards in craft: the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in Craft in 1996, and the Jean A. Chalmers National Craft Award in 1998.

Jane focuses on a continuing series called "Places of Peace." The resulting landscapes are in homes and collections around the world.
