Artist Bio / Statement
Hi, my name is Julie Taylor. I’m a Florida-based artist specializing in various types of fabric dyeing, upcycling, and printmaking, operating under the name Juletones. My fabric dyeing journey began almost 16 years ago when I created my first tie-dye t-shirt at a friend’s birthday party. From that moment on, I was hooked and immediately went home to beg my mom for supplies. She probably thought it would be another hobby I’d drop in a week, but it quickly snowballed into making and selling my creations to high school friends.
After high school, I set aside fabric dyeing to pursue a degree in Graphic Design at UCF. I quickly realized that, unlike other art majors, graphic designers had to prioritize function and practicality—essentially the opposite approach I took with tie-dyeing. This mindset shift was challenging, but I began incorporating clothes and fabric dyeing into my assigned projects whenever possible (I don’t think my instructors liked this very much, haha). Through this, I started to see how I could approach fabric dyeing in a more structured way, using graphic design to refine and legitimize my work.
In 2020, I officially began selling my clothing and creating short-form tutorial content under the name Juletones. Since then, I’ve released several small collections, focusing on upcycled, ice-dye, reverse dye, and garment-dyed pieces. I’ve also been experimenting with alternative dyeing methods, like my most recent “bubble dyeing” technique. The past four years have been incredibly rewarding, watching my brand evolve and spark interest in others. Moving forward, I plan to release more one-of-one pieces and create long-form tutorials that I hope will inspire and promote sustainability and creativity.
For those wanting to know which Dharma products I use, 99% of my dyes are Dharma’s Natural Fiber Procion Dyes and I probably have about 150 colors by now (be careful it’s addicting!). I also use a few other chemicals such as Soda Ash, Urea, Sodium Alginate, Dharma’s Dyer’s Detergent, and Milsoft fabric softener for most of my projects.
