Spinners who seek unusual fibers to spin will enjoy working with this fiber hailing from the Isle of Man. The Manx Loaghtan is a very old and rare breed, recently brought back from the brink of extinction, that descends from the primitive sheep once found throughout Scotland, the Hebrides, and Shetland Islands. It's wool is surprisingly soft and historically it has been used for sweaters and tailored suits. Their medium wool has a good crimp and moderate luster; a wonderful fiber for hand felting or spinning.

I found this to be a wonderful long fibre to spin-- when I wanted to alter the colour without damaging the fibre I used a mixture of human hair bleach with developer producing a lighter shade of camel and sometimes overdyed it with wool dye.- it was still lovely & soft!

I bought one pound of M.L. because I loved the color. Period. Knew nothing about the breed or how to spin it. When I started spinning I was underwhelmed. Thought the singles looked lame and was just not into it. But since I had bought 16 oz I felt obligated to spin it all and as time went on I got more used to it. Actually started to enjoy the process though I vowed to never buy it again. Imagine my surprise after spinning and washing it what a lovely yarn I got despite my whining. Really very nice and quite soft despite its hairy look. Now its one of my favorite fibers to spin. I spun heavy fingering weight singles and then 2 plied them. Looks are deceiving in this case and I urge you to give it a try to see if you agree.L
