Artist Bio / Statement
We started tie-dyeing because it was something that neither I nor my partner had really tried our hands at. We started using some shop dyes that did a bit of color but, of course, the first tries were clumsy and yielded, unsatisfactory results. We decided to look for better colors and every sign pointed to Dharma so this was where we were 2 months ago. When we got our first order of dyes and soda ash along with a few more odds and ends we had a lot of fun looking into the website for new ways to use them and finding the right mixes to get the results we wanted. After a few different techniques we landed on ice-dyeing as our favorite, the way the colors dropped through the fabric really pulls the eye. After a week hearing people say to us "Do you sell those?" we made more and I'm happy to say that there are a few people that really like the work we do. We, in our infinite goofiness, decided to give ourselves a catchy moniker, a few icons, and now go to our local open market each week to share our colors with our neighbors and sell pieces to anyone who wants. It's really the art that drives us now, to push our boundaries and do different items, and to see what each variation and color can do with different folds and resists. I like to think of it as a riot of colors, each new piece, unique and individual, open to interpretation. We use such a wide variety of Dharma Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes it would be difficult to list them all but they are the only dyes we use. I can't recommend them enough!
