Judy Flores has lived in the U.S. Territory of Guam since moving with her parents to teaching jobs there in 1957. She grew up in the traditional village of Inarajan, where she still lives today. As a school arts teacher in the 1970s, she began to experiment with batik. She initially used fiber-reactive dyes on muslin or cotton sheeting. As Dharma introduced newer materials, such as the silk fabrics, paints, and dyes, she continued to grow with the technology.
She draws on her cultural experiences, Guam’s rich history, and the beautiful scenery of the island in order to create rich, colorful fine art paintings. She is represented in Guam by Framed, etc. Gallery, and internationally by Centerstone Creations, who reproduces her work in glass ornamental pieces and other unique reproductions. Centerstone also organizes Judy’s international workshop schedule. The paintings pictured here are done on habotai silk with Jacquard Dye-na-Flow color liquids and melted wax applied as a resist between dye colors.
