I am a belly dancer and fire performer in Atlanta. For indoor venues and daylight fun, there weren't good choices for spinning poi. So now I make glow poi and use these as a base for silk veils and silk poi flags for daylight and UV glow performances. Poi is the Maori word for "ball," and when I perform fire poi, I have a chain in each hand with a ball of kevlar rope that is soaked in fuel and set on fire, and the fire makes beautiful trail patterns in the dark. But during the day, it was not as much fun, so I created veil poi to attach to the poi so you can see the trails and lines of movement as you spin. Flag poi are silk flags that are weighted and used to illustrate arm movements.
I use Habotai silk of differing weights with Dya-Na-Flow silk paints to achieve my looks. I paint on a frame, as well as using shibori techniques. I also do costume design.
