No-Sew Silk Chiffon Wedding Veil with Lace Edging
a Dharma featured tutorial
You can make a beautiful veil for your special day at home very inexpensively by adding lace or ribbon to the edge of the fabric. We will show how you can use bobby pins to secure the veil directly onto your hair as well as how to add a barrette or clip if you prefer.
Supplies:
- Dyeable Cotton Lace Trim - approximately 4 yards, we used #LYHM25. Alternatively, you can use Woven Silk Ribbon 3/4 inch Wide #SR7.
- White Silk Chiffon - one yard (CHIF)
- Clip or Barrette of some sort
- Scissors
- Safety pins
- Measuring tape (or a ruler that is at least 18"
- Bobby Pins
- Hot Glue gun (a mini one is fine) or Aleene's Ok To Wash-It
- 3-4 glue gun refills
- Black marker or Washable Wonder Marker
Let's get started!
Take the yard of silk chiffon and fold it in half twice so you end up with a square piece of folded fabric. You are going to use this folded square to cut out a circle.
Find the corner of the fabric with no edges on it, this is the center of the fabric. Position the measuring tape at the edge of that corner (make sure the folds continue to stay together as you do so). Use the measuring tape and measure 18" out along the edge of the square, then use the black marker to make a small mark noting where the 18" point.
Keep the end of the measuring tape in the same place but move the measuring tape itself 4-5 inches to the right while keeping the length at 18".
Continue doing this until you have marked out an arc on the square from one corner to another.
Use the scissors to cut along the arc line. Make sure to cut through all of the layers of the fabric. When you unfold the fabric you will have a full circle to work with.
Now use the safety pins to loosely pin the lace to the edge of the circle you just created. We suggest having approximately 4 yards of lace as we used just over 3 yards to complete the circle. Pinning the lace to the fabric first is super helpful in keeping it secure when you move onto the next step and glue the fabric and lace together.
Once the lace is pinned all the way around, use the hot glue gun or Aleene's Ok To Wash-It to permanently attach the lace to the fabric edge. (Tip: You can glue about 3 inches of lace at a time before the glue sets up.) Continue attaching the lace around the entire edge of the circle until complete. Let the glue cool (or dry) fully.
Here's a look at the finished product:
The model shown has her hair in a bun. We also used bobby pins to secure the veil to the bun so that the veil can be flipped over and draped over the bride's back as well. Note- this may cause permanent holes in the silk that will not close up later.
You can also attach the edge of the veil to a comb (a metal bridal comb is recommended) and secure that directly into your hair as well.
Another option you have is to add a barrette or clip directly onto the veil. Here are some basic steps outlining how to do that:
Fold the raw edge and do a run stitch through the fold. Continue until all of the fabric has been sewn together then pull the thread to bunch the fabric. The bottom of the fabric will also have a raw edge. You can add lace, hem it or leave it as is.
Apply hot glue to the clip or barrette you have chosen then, add the sewn portion of the veil.
Allow time for the hot glue to dry. Here are some photos of the final result with the clip:
