Fiber Alchemy
Artist Bio / Statement
I have been working in various forms of Fiber Arts most of my life. Starting with sewing and costume design. I love all forms of this medium, pine needles, wool roving, alpaca, botanical dyeing and printing. Working with these organic, natural materials, from gathering to finished work is a joy. The texture, colors, diversity, and limitless possibilities fiber offers is delicious and there is no limit to the exploration of this wonderful creative adventure.
In the past few years I have embraced the The Botanical Print/Dye process that uses plants such as Eucalyptus to transfer the image of leaf, flower or stem onto fabric using iron, copper, alum or other mordants to bind the natural color of the botanical to the fabric. Botanicals are also be used to create lovely natural dye baths.
The results are no less than magical. This combined with nuno-felting to create unique wearable art has been such a wonderful adventure.
Dharma Trading has been invaluable resource for my explorations. The silks are exquisite reasonable enough to encourage experimentation and now that you are carrying natural dyes I am in heaven!!! Recently I have been experimenting with indigo and the Pre-Reduced Indigo Crystals have been a wonderful way to play.
I have my work on Etsy as well in galleries and boutiques.
